CMS and Me

I'm not too sure what the point of this topic is, but I should probably go into why this CMS is the way it is.

The website is, if you haven't noticed Drupal. It was original some 4.x revision of Drupal, upgraded to 6.2 lately. I'm not the prettiest web designer, so it's a default theme. Well, it once was a non-default theme, but apparently throughout Drupal's development cycle, this ended up default.

The reasons for Drupal are varied:

  • It provides a unified pages, stories, and forum implementation. That is, on the front page I can promote any node, such as a forum topic, story, or whatnot.
  • The extension and module API is a pretty clean implementation. I've seen other CMS extension modules, it's ugly.
  • Drupal has had a pretty good long-term upgrade policy. Not that the other CMS doesn't, but I've been impressed at the relative ease of upgrades. (Although the 6.2 upgrade ate our images, I sorta understand why... sorta.)
  • It's different. Most Guild websites are PHPbb over another CMS possibly. I like doing things differently. The only guild website I've seen that used Drupal was Pirate (I haven't checked recently), but they still used a PHPbb backend.

There are a few drawbacks:

  • No fancy formatting like PHPbb. You have to know HTML to write stuff. Offhand, this is not a major problem.
  • Confusing to new/inexperienced/PHPbb users. Again, not a major problem, learn HTML. Some might call me Elitist.
  • Caching, performance and scalability. This is a problem more specific to PHP than anything else. To me, performance and caching seems WAY low. That said, I used to write CGI's in C so I have a funky perspective on this.
  • Sorta on the performance note, no direct support for Database transactions with the database API. I don't think this is unique. I'm going to mutter something about stupid MySQL (yes I know they have transactions NOW, but only if you use InnoDB or something, plus these platforms were written before MySQL had transactions). Drupal does support PostgreSQL (ahh... sweet transactions, sub-selects, but.. damn you, where's your replication?) but the API doesn't support a db_start_transaction() or something. Yes, I'm nitpicky, but anything database intensive gets ugly.

Peng raid time

Oh yeah, I forgot to answer Teff's original question. Peng raid time is Saturdays 4:30-8:30pm HST during daylight savings time, and 5:30-9:30pm HST during standard time.

Ass sphincter says what?

It's extremely stinky for me that most of what you posted was french to me or well any other langauge besides English :0) TY Wiki... I understand the grand sceme of things. This has been going on for about two years and well utter failure- me trying to teach myself code or as I call it "the other web we weave". Haha... once I learn the ins-and-outs I'll have a new addiction. For now HTML is perty standard and worst case, google "html code link" yada yada!!! YAY 21st century.

So hmm... OT; is it? Cause I was thinking we needed more subcategories in the forums. Whether they're set up under php, api, cms, sql, ahh, ohh, cgi, html or my favorite LMNOP.

I would love a "nonsense" category, so I could post stuff-
Thats Stupid Hard

Cats IN the Bag
TYTYTY

They get better :)

*edit* oh wait.. I was wondering what you added and then I just figured it out... I wasn't thinking under the category dropdown because for starters I didn't even know there was one. I thought it would be outside of general discussion and guild forum. 1) it's not general; possibly general nonsense 2) it's outside the guild

Can we search by those categories? Now I've thunk we need a "PP.org stupid hard website intro" I would post it... but it's wheewww I'm confuzzled
