How to be a good raider with the Pirate Penguins

Here are some guidelines for being a good raider, and giving the raid leader a minimum amount of headache..

Getting 10 people of the right set of classes/roles is not easy. It makes it significantly easier to organize a raid, if we know who can and cannot make it to a raid.
Listen to your raid leader.
Initiative is a good trait to have. However, what may work for you, may not work for the rest of the raid. Many fights require a certain amount of coordination. Choosing to do your own thing may result in fights being harder than they should be, or in the worst case result in a wipe.
Prepare for the raid ahead of time
This includes repairing your gear, and stocking up consumables. If you need help getting consumables, ask the guild for help.
Do your own homework
If we are working on a new encounter, it will help to look at strategy guides ahead of time so you have a general idea of what to do in that fight. We cannot babysit you through each encounter
Show up on time
This does not mean log on when the raid is supposed to start. You should either be at the raid instance by that time, or be ready to be summoned at least 15 minutes before raid start. Do not assume that you can wait for a summon. If you do not show up on time, do not assume a spot will be saved for you.
Do not argue with people in raid or voice chat
If you have an issue with someone, try to resolve it via a side-channel to avoid distracting the rest of the raid. If you have a suggestion, whisper the raid leader. If the raid leader decides not to go with your suggestion right away, do not attempt to implement your ideas on your own.
Do not broadcast damage/healing meters during the raid
Meters, while useful for analyzing personal performance, are more of a distraction during the raid than a benefit. If someone becomes focused on topping the meters, they risk drawing aggro and killing themselves and/or the raid, or running out of mana and killing themselves and/or the raid. If you want to boost your ego, find another venue to do so.
Communicate
This includes coordinating healing assignments between healers, and buff assignments among the raid. If you see someone who needs a buff, speak up, and ask for it politely. If you are not sure what you're supposed to do in a given situation, ask.If you need help with something, like you're low on mana and could use an innervate, ask. This does not necessarily mean that you need to broadcast every time you died or are low on mana or are low on health. Use your common sense. If you need to do a extensive amount of coordination with others in the raid, unless you are the raid leader, it would be best to set up a secondary chat channel to do.
Be courteous to your fellow raiders
For example, do not demand buffs or consumables from other raid members. If you see a way for someone to improve what they're doing, provide the criticism in a constructive manner. Personal insults, racial/sexual/religious slurs, and other types of attacks will not be tolerated. Doing such will result in you being removed from the raid and possibly the guild.
Do not ninja AFK
If you need to go AFK, please let the raid know. In some fights, having a raider AFK can result in a wipe.
Plan your schedule accordingly
If you cannot attend the full duration of a raid, or if you need to go AFK extensively, please step aside to let in someone else who can participate in the raid fully.
Need before greed
Yes, epics are nice. However, consider the needs of the rest of the raid before going after any drops. Raids are a group effort. Would a minor upgrade for you benefit the raid more than a major upgrade for another raider? Do not assume that you are entitled to everything that drops.
Work on your gear
Do not expect to go on a raid with sub-par gear. You will not gear up entirely through raids. You can acquire upgrades through quests, instance drops, heroic badge rewards and crafting. You should also have your gear gemmed, and enchanted appropriately. We have multiple crafters who can help you with upgrading your gear.

Raid Preparedness

Though I know a few of you are already perfection when it comes to this list, almost everyone (definitely including me) is guilty of doing/not doing some of these at some point or other. Please take a gander if you haven't already done so, as it makes the raids easier on the leader and the raid in general, plzkthx.

Penguin raid add-ons

There are two add-ons that we require for our raids:

  1. Omen Threat Meter - whether playing a DPS or healing role, it is very important to be aware of the amount of threat you generate. Unless you're a tank, you will be highly unlikely to survive should you pull aggro away from the tank.
  2. Deadly Boss Mods - this provides you with timers and alerts for each raid boss. Also, this provides you with a proximity warning for fights like Gruul or Akil'zon (ZA eagle boss), where players standing too close together can wipe a raid.
